Slow Cooker Beef Tips in Mushroom Gravy

Slow Cooker Beef Tips in Mushroom Gravy

My husband loves when I make comfort food for dinner.  And this Beef Tips in Mushroom Gravy Recipe happens to come from his mom, so its even more a winner in his book. If your husband is like mine, serving this over hot buttery mashed potatoes the best way to get straight to his heart...through his stomach!

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds stew meat
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 12 oz sliced mushrooms fresh or canned
  • 3 cans chicken broth
  • ¼ cup brown gravy mix
  • ½ cup Wondra Quick-MIxing Flour
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large slow cooker stir together stew meat, soup, mushrooms, broth, and gravy mix. Cook on low 8-10 hours.
  2. Just before serving, scoop out about 4 cups of sauce and whisk in a bowl with Wondra. Season with salt and pepper to taste and return to slow cooker.
  3. Serve over hot noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes.

  1. When I first saw this recipe, I thought it looked great. Then on closer inspection, I had a few doubts: 1) I always thought that slow cookers need very little liquid, so wondered about the 3 cans of chicken broth, that's a lot of liquid on top of the can of mushroom soup. 2) Didn't like the thought of my lovely fresh mushrooms stewing away to nothing for 8-10 hours, why not add them 30-45 minutes before the end?
Also need to be very careful with the added seasoning as most of the (canned) ingredients are already heavily seasoned.
I honestly wonder if this is really a tried and true recipe and if anyone has tried it and found it good?
I notice the question about the flour has gone unanswered for a while.

    1. This is a tried and true recipe at our house for sure! All the liquid makes such a wonderful gravy. And yes, it would certainly work fine to add the mushrooms at the very end. I will look back at the questions and try to answer any there. I have been working on learning a new comment program.....it's a learning curve to get everything approved and answered. :).
